BMW M5 - OFFICIAL SAFETY CAR OF MOTOGP 2018.

After its debut at the final race of the 2017 season, BMW M has just announced the BMW M5 as the 2018 MotoGP™ Safety Car. The model’s inclusion as the safety car marks the first time that BMW M xDrive will be used on a course car.

Modifying the car for the 2018 season was an exciting task for BMW engineers. Taking priority was the TwinPower Turbo, 600hp engine, which received an overhaul allowing the car to speed from 0-63mph in just 3.4 seconds.

A range of tailor-made components were developed too, including unique indicators, roof-mounted flat line lights, a new rear diffuser, rear spoiler, side sills, and an enhanced front kidney grille.

Frank Van Meel, President of BMW M said “A MotoGP Safety Car faces enormous challenges. It is vital to lead a field of unique, high-performance race prototypes safely through all sorts of conditions.” Adding “The new BMW M5 forms the perfect basis for a safety car, as its technical features ensure perfect handling, even at the limits of driving dynamics - on the road and on the racetrack.”

During production, designers turned to the BMW M5’s racing counterparts for inspiration. This led them to use the bucket seats from the current BMW M4 GTS for improved safety. The exterior design of the car took inspiration from the recently released BMW M8 GTE. The result is a sportier and more athletic exterior than the production version. To complete the design, a Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic Roof was installed, an optional extra on the current BMW M5.
