The New BMW i3: The Electric 3 Series Has Arrived

18 March 2026

For 50 years, the BMW 3 Series has been the heartbeat of the brand — a car that has consistently set the standard for driver engagement, design and innovation. Now, the all-new BMW i3 carries that legacy forward as the second model of BMW's ground-up Neue Klasse reinvention, and it does so with a technological leap that's hard to overstate.

Range That Changes the Conversation

The headline figure is one that will turn heads: up to 559 miles on a single charge under WLTP test conditions. That's not just class-leading — it's the longest range of any electric vehicle currently available in Europe. When you do need to top up, the i3 supports up to 400kW DC rapid charging, meaning you can add around 249 miles of range in just 10 minutes. For those charging at home or at slower public points, AC charging is supported at up to 22kW.

This capability is made possible by BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology — a complete rethink of the battery and motor architecture, built around an 800-volt platform and newly developed cylindrical lithium-ion cells that deliver 20% greater energy density than the previous generation.

Power and Performance

The i3 launches in the UK as the i3 50 xDrive, with twin electric motors — one on each axle — producing a combined 469bhp and 645Nm of torque. BMW hasn't yet confirmed a 0–62mph figure, but the hardware suggests it will be seriously quick.

What's perhaps more interesting than the raw numbers is how the power is managed. At the heart of the i3's dynamics is a new system BMW calls the Heart of Joy — a high-performance central computer that controls driving, braking, steering inputs, charging and recuperation. It responds ten times faster than BMW's previous systems, making cornering more precise, more predictable and more confidence-inspiring. A new Soft-Stop function also ensures the i3 decelerates with complete smoothness — no jerks, no brake noise — with regenerative braking handling almost all everyday stopping duties.

The suspension combines a two-joint spring strut front axle with a new five-link rear setup, with optional adaptive M suspension available for those who want an even sharper edge to their driving experience.

A Design Built for the Electric Age

The i3 is immediately recognisable as a 3 Series, yet it looks like nothing BMW has made before. The exterior follows the Neue Klasse design philosophy — clean, purposeful and aerodynamically optimised — with a distinctive shark-nose front end, a reimagined horizontal kidney grille that integrates seamlessly with the twin headlights, and a sweeping roofline that flows into pronounced rear haunches.

Flush door handles extend automatically when you approach with your Digital Key, the underbody is completely sealed for efficiency, and the standard 21-inch M Aerodynamic alloys lend a genuinely premium stance. At the rear, three-dimensional horizontal tail lights stretch wide into the bodywork, emphasising the car's width and road presence.

Eleven exterior colours are available from launch, including the exclusive new M Le Castellet Blue, available on the i3 only.

Inside: Spacious, Smart and Sustainable

Step inside and the i3's purpose-built electric architecture pays immediate dividends. Without a transmission tunnel eating into the cabin, the interior feels noticeably more open and airy than any previous 3 Series.

The centrepiece is the BMW Panoramic iDrive — a genuinely innovative display concept that projects key information across the full width of the windscreen from A-pillar to A-pillar, keeping your eyes on the road rather than glancing down at a screen. This is complemented by a 17.9-inch central touchscreen with a 3,340 x 1,440 pixel resolution and an optional 3D Head-Up Display. The steering wheel retains physical Shy Tech controls — buttons that only illuminate when their functions are active — staying true to BMW's "hands on the wheel, eyes on the road" philosophy.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has also been upgraded, now incorporating Amazon Alexa+ large language model technology for more natural, conversational voice control. Up to seven driver profiles can be stored via BMW ID, each saving personal seat, display and media preferences automatically.

In a nod to sustainability, seat covers in the standard specification are made from Econeer material — 100% recycled polyester. Around 30% of the entire vehicle is constructed from recycled or secondary materials, including 80% recycled aluminium in key chassis components and 70% recycled aluminium in the alloy wheels.

Driver Assistance

The i3 comes with a comprehensive suite of Level 2 driver assistance systems under the BMW Symbiotic Drive banner. Driving Assistant Plus can manage speed, distance and lane-keeping, adjusting automatically for speed limits, bends and roundabouts. Crucially, the system is designed so that the driver can still steer, accelerate or brake without instantly disengaging the assistance — making it feel far more natural in everyday use.

Production & UK Availability

The BMW i3 will be built at Plant Munich — BMW's spiritual home, which has been producing vehicles for over a century. Following significant modernisation over the past four years, production of the i3 is set to begin in August 2026, with first UK customer deliveries expected in autumn 2026.

Full UK pricing and detailed specifications will be confirmed closer to launch.
