BMW offered the sedan as the ideal all-round car for customers working with a budget. The all-steel body had everything necessary in a car for the family: complete protection against adverse weather conditions, space for three adults or two adults with children, wide doors with convenient wind-down windows for easy entry, comfortable seats and a fully-fledged interior upholstered in fabric material. Curtains adorning the rear and side windows along with ceiling lighting created a homely atmosphere. There was even space for a small trunk behind the seats. The advertising department created the apt slogan "Bigger on the inside than the outside" ("Innen größer als außen").

The baggage compartment offered plenty of stowage space and larger items could be attached to the roof rails. The payload of 265 kg was astonishingly large for a small vehicle. The post office (Reichspost) also had a fleet of these small express delivery vans.

However, if the top was closed, passengers sitting in the rear could no longer see out of the sides. The comprehensive equipment made the convertible the most expensive model in the series.

BMW delivered the value-for-money entry-level model in the form of the 2-seater for the cost-conscious gentleman driver who was more interested in the reliability of his car rather than in expensive luxury. The equipment was correspondingly rudimentary. The bodywork was a combination of wood and steel covered in leather. It provided space for two passengers with a small amount of luggage. The all-weather soft top was made of plastic material, the four side windows could be inserted in the doors and were made of Cellon with a faux-leather surround. When the car was being driven, very often only the two front windows were used in order at least to give the driver some protection against the headwind. The low weight made the car very manoeuvrable, and this was reflected in overall victory at the Alpine race held in 1929.

The middle section of the sedan roof was made of coated plastic for reasons of production. This was replaced by a design in which the rubberised roof material could be rolled up from front to back. This rolled-up roof was then fastened above the rear window using straps. That created a hybrid form made up of sedan and convertible in which passengers received a high degree of protection against draughts and yet were still able to enjoy an unrestricted view skywards.

The centre of gravity was lowered and the engine performance was increased within the defined limits. Top speeds of 100 km/h were possible. Many much more powerful models struggled to achieve this. The Wartburg type became the first real sports car from the BMW marque and established an enduring tradition in motor sport that continues to the present day.

The exterior of the BMW 321 Sedan differed only slightly from that of the previous model, the 320. The rear-hinged doors were the most easily recognisable attribute. Moreover, the company had now managed to compensate for the initial technical deficiencies beneath the metal dress. The loud engine noises had been reduced by means of slight modifications. However, adoption of the more stable front axle design used in the BMW 326 was much more important because it gave the car the same excellent driving characteristics as the larger model.

The company advertised the beautiful 2-seater convertible for sporty ladies or gentlemen drivers. The interior was upholstered in attractive faux leather, finished in a colour to match the paintwork. In the final model year, BMW made numerous improvements to the sedan in order to address criticism that had been levelled relating to lack of space and the hard front suspension. Design modifications significantly strengthened the all-steel body and the interior was lengthened by 20 cm. The greater length was primarily beneficial for passengers seated in the rear. The newly developed front swing axle held out the promise of better road holding and increased driving safety. However, contrary to expectations, the softer cushioning resulted in reduced overall stability and directional stability, leading to strident negative reviews from the trade press.

The last bodywork version was launched in January 1931: a coupé version of the 2-seater convertible. The intended target group was professionals who have to travel long distances overland with a lot of luggage for work but want to benefit from a maximum level of comfort and travel at high average speeds. The low running costs were an additional feature that was continually highlighted. Marketing campaigns were therefore always directed towards business travellers and medical practitioners. The coupé had perfect weather protection, a large trunk and offered the driver wide doors and comfortable seating.

In autumn 1932, a BMW three-wheeler delivery van with cardan drive and blower-cooled 200 cc engine generating 6 hp was launched as the Type F 76. For a starting price, the customer received a two-seater driver's cab that could be enclosed on request. The open platform had a payload capacity of 650 kg. Despite its high quality, the conveyance produced in Eisenach was unable to generate the desired sales successes. Only 250 units had been built by 1933 when a slightly more powerful version (F 79) was added.

In 1933, a second version of the BMW three-wheeler delivery van was launched as the Type BMW F 79. This van also had a cardan drive and blower-cooled engine. However, this engine had a displacement of 400 cc and generated an output of 14 hp. Like its sister model, the vehicle had a two-seater driver’s cab, which could be fully enclosed on request, and a high payload capacity of 650 kg. The load-bearing platform of the BMW three-wheeler van could be supplied with an open platform, a closed van body or a wide payload area with tarpaulin and frame. This model likewise failed to achieve high sales figures and production of BMW delivery three-wheelers was discontinued in 1934. From 1933 to 1934, 350 three-wheelers of the F 79 model were produced.

Compared to the predecessor model, the new sedan was now significantly more "grown-up" ("erwachsener") on account of its additional length and width. The extension of the wheelbase in particular was not simply a feature of the visual appearance, it also benefited the interior. Now there really was adequate space for four adults. The quality of the construction and tasteful equipment of the Sindelfingen bodywork made the small car a serious competitor in the German market in spite of its price tag. However, the automobile had little to fear from the competition when it came to engine performance and equipment.

The most athletic version was the two-seater, already exuberantly also referred to as a "roadster" by the copywriter in promotional literature. Luxury in a small format is the best way of describing the convertible in the model series. The interior offered adequate space for four adults and tasteful equipment styled in genuine leather. This was how BMW advertised the new van. In fact, it had an astonishingly large stowage space for a small vehicle. In addition, the spare wheel and a large number of packages or larger items could be transported on the roof rails. In view of the strong competition from cheap delivery three-wheelers offering significantly more stowage space, the BMW was too expensive for the businessman thinking coolly only about the economic benefits.

However, particular attention was also paid to the excellent road holding of the newly designed tubular chassis. The "Twin Kidneys" ("Doppelniere") as the radiator grille gave the BMW 303 the striking front profile with a high recognition value for the first time.

On the occasion of the presentation of the BMW 315 at the Berlin Motor Show held in 1934, the prototype of a roadster was also launched in the public arena there. An advanced type that had undergone further development was added to the product range as a replacement for the two-seater convertible: the sports convertible. The vehicle developed by Reutter was based on the shape of the 315/1 sports car. It was styled with the long tail tapering downwards. This exuded an aura of sporty athleticism even when the car was standing still. The high doors with wind-up windows and the perfectly closing roof were, however, clear signals that this was a sporty and simultaneously comfortable touring car.

In order to serve the clientele that was inclined to prefer a conservative shape to the bodywork, BMW included another convertible model in its product range that was designed by coachbuilder Drauz located in Heilbronn. There was a large trunk at the rear that was accessible from the outside to accommodate a greater amount of luggage. In addition, two emergency seats in the interior could also be used as an extended trunk. The two chrome storm bars on the roof cued a stylistic feature provided in much more expensive luxury convertibles.

The 4-seater convertible provided lots of space for driving with the wind coursing through occupants' hair. In common with all open-top vehicles, the comfortable seats and the bench seat in the rear of the car were all upholstered in leather. The touring car represented the bodywork form that provided the best value for money when it came to transporting four people. However, there was very little protection against the elements and bad weather. The folding top made of canvas had a simple design and the side windows with Cellon panes had to be inserted on top of the doors if required. In order to serve the clientele that was inclined to prefer a conservative shape to the bodywork, BMW included another convertible model in its product range that was designed by coachbuilder Drauz located in Heilbronn. BMW succeeded in creating one of the most beautiful sports cars of all times with the Roadster 507, first presented at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955. This automobile was based on the engineering of the 3.2 litre 502 Sedan but was driven by an engine with power increased to 150 hp. The 507 was based on the designs penned by the protégé of Raymond Loewy, Albrecht Graf Goertz. During the years 1956 and 1957, BMW marketed two additional bodywork versions of the Isetta: the BMW Isetta Convertible and the Isetta delivery van derived from the convertible, known as the BMW Isetta Pick-up. A respectable payload up to 250 kg in weight could be carried by this little "transporter" ("Transporter"). The promotional material highlighted the advantages for leisure activities and for commercial firms. The Isetta delivery van was supplied with the 250 cc and the 300 cc engine. Production numbers were significantly below the convertible but a precise figure for the number of vehicles delivered cannot be determined.

In the years between 1956 and 1957, BMW supplied two additional body versions of the Isetta: BMW Isetta Convertible and the Isetta delivery van, also known as the BMW Isetta Pick-up. A three-wheeler version of the BMW Isetta was also manufactured in Munich, primarily intended for export to Austria, Switzerland, Holland and Scandinavia. Owing to its external similarity, the BMW 600 is often referred to as the "four-seater Isetta" ("viersitzige Isetta"). It's not simply the characteristic front door, but the compact shape with small wheels also inspires direct associations with the Isetta with which BMW forged the streetscape of the 1950s. Alongside the mode of entry at the front, the BMW 600 only has one side door on the right-hand side for stability reasons, making it a unique example of automobile design.

The BMW 501 produced from 1952 was the first post-war automobile to be manufactured by BMW. The sedan had up to six seats and was soon known throughout Germany as the "Baroque Angel" ("Barockengel") on account of the conservative design of the bodywork. The power unit was an advanced development of the six-cylinder engine from the pre-war type BMW 326. BMW's intention was to use the BMW 501 to re-establish its reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality automobiles. However, demand - also for the eight-cylinder model BMW 502 - lagged significantly behind expectations.

Two years after discontinuation of the BMW 503, the BMW 3200 CS was launched in the marketplace. This was only supplied as a coupé with the exception of a one-off convertible version. Following on from the German-American designer Albrecht Graf Goertz, Italian designer Nuccio Bertone was now responsible for work on the design. The 3.2 litre V8 engine generating 160 hp ensured athletic driving performance and a top speed of 200 km/h. Nevertheless, the car like its predecessor, the BMW 503, was not an economic success and so production was halted in 1965 after 603 units had been produced.

The BMW 501 was the first post-war model and it was joined by the more luxurious model BMW 502 in September 1954. Although there were also coupé and convertible versions, the four-door sedan with up to six seats was nevertheless the standard body for the BMW 502, as in the case of the BMW 501. Between September 1954 and December 1963, it was supplied exclusively powered by 2.6 litre and 3.2 litre V8 engines under differing model designations. The BMW 503 celebrated its debut at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1955. The luxurious 2+2 seater coupé originated from the pen of Albrecht Graf Goertz, like the convertible and roadster BMW 507. The luxurious 2+2 seater car stood somewhat in the shadow of the BMW 507 Roadster, which was likewise presented there. In mid-1961, the BMW 700 Convertible was launched as the most exclusive model in the 700 Series. Coachbuilder Bauer in Stuttgart had put forward the idea of this open-top version and was ultimately granted the order for design and production by BMW. Baur stiffened the load-bearing elements, and the tail end of the car was redesigned. An uncomplicated open-top mechanism made it easier to operate the folding roof. BMW installed the lively 40 hp engine taken from the BMW 700 Sport. By November 1964, 2,600 examples of the BMW 700 Convertible had been produced.

The design created under the influence of Giovanni Michelotti is understated but the interior styling is very luxurious. Furthermore, different versions with a longer wheelbase created more comfort in the rear. A model revision for the "Grand Sedans" "Große Limousinen") was carried out in 1971, which were increasingly appealing to customers in the major export markets (most importantly in the USA). The models there also went under the name BMW Bavaria.

The BMW Design Department was already toying with the idea of an "estate sedan" ("Kombi-Limousine") in the mid-1960s. In 1971, the design penned by Paul Bracq finally became a reality and the BMW 2002 tii Touring was launched at the Brussels Motor Show. In addition to the steeper windscreen and the shorter rear end, which had been reduced by 12 cm, the estate version also differed from the sedan in a number of equipment details. Although there was a choice between four different engine versions, it failed to achieve a commercial breakthrough. And the body concept is regarded as highly relevant today.

The new BMW 3 Series was launched - as the successor to the 02 model series - only in a single bodywork style: as a two-door sedan. The styling followed the new line of Chief Designer Paul Bracq which had already been applied to the BMW 5 Series. Nevertheless, the BMW 3 Series Sedan is an independent vehicle with compact dimensions and a sporty character. The first BMW 3 Series was marketed in four-cylinder and six-cylinder versions from 1977-1982. From 1983, automotive coachbuilder Baur in Stuttgart offered a Topcabriolet convertible that was marketed through the BMW dealer network.

In 1985, BMW presented its own full convertible based on the BMW 3 Series. This was the first convertible developed in the factory since the legendary BMW 503 Convertible from the year 1956 and it was marketed in parallel with the Baur Topcabriolet. The six-cylinder models marked the start of these convertibles. The BMW 318i Convertible came along in 1990 as the first four-cylinder model. As was already the case for the first generation of the BMW 5 Series, the successor was only supplied as a four-door sedan. The language of design borrowed a great deal from the previous model and the first engines were also familiar from the E12. However, the range of power plants supplied was gradually expanded and defined milestones in the history of BMW. These benchmarks included the first diesel engine in the BMW 524d and the BMW 524 td, and the fuel-efficient eta engine in the 525e. Then there was the BMW M535i, designed to enthuse motor-sport fans. After all, the flagship model in the series ultimately became the first BMW M5.

The BMW M3 (E30) Convertible was presented at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 1987 and went into series production from 1988 onwards. This output made it the most powerful four-seater series convertible. Manufacture came to an end in 1991 with a production run of just 786 examples.

The third model generation of the 3 Series launched at the end of 1990 had a substantially improved aerodynamic design. The wheelbase was 13 centimetres longer than that of its predecessor and it was designed from the start as a four-door vehicle. The BMW 3 Series from the third model generation was launched at the tail end of 1990 with much-improved aerodynamic contours. The Touring was launched in spring of 1995 as the fifth body version of the E36. The stylistically successful lifestyle estate car was initially marketed both as a four-cylinder in the versions 318i and 318tds, and as a six-cylinder in the versions 320i, 328i and 325tds. The 316i and 323i Types followed in 1996. Significant improvements were achieved by comparison with the previous model. These included the total space available for luggage and the performance and safety.

From 1993, the BMW 3 Series (E36) was also supplied in a full convertible version alongside the Topcabriolet from Baur, which had been available for some time. The contours were similar to those of the coupé with the flatter engine hood and its extension by 8 cm giving the car an even more sporty profile compared to the sedan. While the convertible was initially only supplied with power generated by six-cylinder engines, a four-cylinder model was added to the product range from 1994 in the form of the BMW 318i. A particularly sporting highlight was provided by the BMW M3 Convertible generating a power output up to 321 hp.

At the end of 1993, BMW presented a completely new body version based on the BMW 3 Series (E36). The car was in dealer showrooms from April 1994. The new Compact was a two-door hatchback sedan shortened by approximately 23 cm. It had a large tailgate and space for four or five people. It was practical and manoeuvrable but it also possessed the sporty character so typical of BMW. The Compact was primarily aimed at a young target group or intended as a second vehicle for married couples or families. It was positioned to compete in the Golf class and the price was targeted as the new entry-level model for the BMW brand. After the sedan and the coupé, the Compact was in fact the version of the BMW 3 Series (E36) with the highest sales figures. Almost 400,000 units were sold.

In common with several previous product generations, coachbuilder Baur from Stuttgart also converted the BMW E36 into a convertible, even though a full convertible was supplied by BMW itself as part of the vehicle portfolio from 1993 onwards. The four-door convertible offered four different roof variations. The side-window frames and the roll bar remained the same, the fixed roof over the front seats could be removed in the same way as a Targa top, and the soft rear-roof section with a rear window comprising a glass panel with a heater could be opened like a landaulette roof design. These multifarious options were unusual. The BMW Baur Topcabriolet was supplied by BMW dealers in the ordinary way with an engine range spanning the BMW 316i through the BMW 318i to the BMW 320i and the BMW 325i. A total of just 311 vehicles were produced.

Initially, the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series was supplied exclusively as a sedan in May 1998. The BMW 3 Series Sedan quickly moved to the top of the segment with a range of modern four-cylinder and six-cylinder inline engines. Although the BMW 3 Series Sedan (E46) was equipped as standard with rear-wheel drive, there were now once more other models with all-wheel drive. The variable valve control (VALVETRONIC) was introduced for the four-cylinder models during the model revision in 2001. Nearly two million units of this bodywork version had been sold by the time production came to an end in 2005.

The BMW 3 Series Touring (E46) was first seen at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 1999. Up until the sales launch in October, Touring enthusiasts still had to be satisfied with the predecessor model (BMW 3 Series Touring E36). This was still being manufactured when the first E46 sedans could already be seen on the road. The large trunk to accommodate baggage in the Touring was equipped as standard with a partition net and roller cover. As in the case of the BMW 5 Series (E39), the rear window could be opened separately from the tailgate in order to load and unload smaller items of baggage. The roof rail supplied as an option gave the profile a sporting look and offered the platform based on an integrated design for the multifunction BMW roof rack that facilitated easy transport for surfboards, bicycles and other bulky luggage. The Touring offered a large variety of engine options with the most popular being the BMW 320D. A total of more than 400,000 BMW 3 Series Touring automobiles rolled out of the factory gates at the Regensburg Plant.

The BMW 3 Series Coupé (E46, also E46/2) only arrived in 1998, almost a year after the successful presentation of the BMW 3 Series Sedan (E46/4) in the marketplace. The coupé presented a rather more athletic design and was more elegant than the sedan, and in particular the styling at the front and rear is exceptionally unique. The bumper trims on the sides are styled in the colour of the car. The sports chassis tuning was provided as standard with the intention of translating this visual impression into the driving experience. The coupé was given a model upgrade in 2003. The production run of almost 450,000 coupés were all manufactured at the Regensburg Plant. In 2006, production of the series came to an end and the successor model was launched on the marketplace in 2007 as the BMW 3 Series Coupé (E92).

The BMW 3 Series (E46) had already been familiar for two years when the four-seater convertible joined the series in 2000. It was based on the sporty, elegant contours of the coupé, and up to the A-pillar the two bodywork profiles were actually identical. However, a rather different rear end combined with the elegant hood to give the convertible a highly individual character. The soft top was made of fabric but it was exceptionally robust and produced to a very high standard of quality. This meant that it did not lose its shape even when the car was being driven at high speeds. Although the roof was extremely well insulated and was indeed snow proof, a hardtop was offered as an option from 2001. From 2003, a fully automatic convertible roof was offered for all models. This mechanism opened and closed the compartment housing the convertible top when it was activated. The driver could operate the mechanism from the cockpit or by using the remote control.

The design of the new BMW 5 Series introduced in 1995 was primarily the responsibility of Joji Nagashima. The BMW 5 Series Sedan was impressive with a side profile emulating a coupé and aerodynamically optimised contours. The round double headlamps were installed behind the same glass cover for the first time in the model series. Light rings for the position light had been a typical BMW characteristic for a long time and they were introduced when the revision was carried out for the model year 2001.

The BMW 5 Series Touring from the new model series followed the sedan in March 1997. The sedan provided the all-aluminium chassis with the rear axle adapted to the requirements of the touring body. The aluminium compact rear axle permitted an even flatter configuration thanks to the inclined arrangement of the shock absorbers. This enabled the luggage compartment of the BMW 5 Series Touring to be even more smoothly contoured and designed without disruptive suspension pods. This measure further increased the already high utility value of the Touring model. The BMW 5 Series Touring also introduced the rear window that could be opened separately. This allowed small items of luggage to be loaded and unloaded without opening the entire tailgate. In addition, an extendable loading floor was available for the 5 Series Touring and this made loading much easier, particularly for heavy or bulky items.

The third generation of the BMW 7 Series was not a complete innovation, at least as far as the design was concerned. The characteristic line was sensitively revised and in spite of the larger dimensions, the stylists succeeded in giving the E38 an even more elegant and dynamic appearance than that of the predecessor generation. The sedan was supplied in a standard and an extended version. From 1996, it was also available as the L7 stretch luxury limousine version with the wheelbase extended by 30 cm. The power unit was also supplied with previously unparalleled diversity. Alongside eight petrol-engine versions, BMW also for the first time offered six-cylinder and eight-cylinder diesel engines in the luxury class, along with a small series powered by hydrogen.

From spring of 1998, a coupé version was also ranged alongside the popular BMW Z3 Roadster. The initially rather polarising design styled with a shooting-brake body (in other words a sporty hatchback coupé) was unflatteringly referred to as a "Turnschuh" or "Clown Shoe". Today, the rare BMW Z3 Coupé is a highly coveted classic car. The coupés were only produced with six-cylinder inline engines and in each case also only with the largest engines: as the BMW Z3 Coupé 2.8 (later replaced by the BMW Z3 Coupé 3.0i) and as the M Coupé. The equipment was correspondingly upscale. Between 1998 and 2002, a total of 17,815 BMW Z3 Coupés were manufactured. Its successor, the BMW Z4 Coupé (E86), was only launched in the marketplace in 2006.

The BMW Z8 was only supplied as a roadster. The exterior embodied the classic fundamental characteristics of a roadster with a long engine hood, a short rear end, a seating position located towards the tail and short overhangs. The round headlamps were designed on the basis of Xenon technology, and the Z8 was the first BMW automobile to be equipped with an elegant "Engine Start" button for activating the ignition.

The first BMW X5 was already being marketed as an SAV ("Sports Activity Vehicle"). And the BMW X5 also easily mastered driving on off-road terrain. Frank Stephenson was responsible for the design of the BMW X5. The idea was to combine the practical properties of an estate car with the athletic prowess of an M automobile. The engineering of the sedan was packed into a Touring body with only minimal modifications. It served a very small market niche for high-performance estate cars and only 891 units were built. This car therefore has a place on the list of the rarest M automobiles ever built. Production came to an end in July 1995.

BMW M3 Coupé (E36)

The standard body style of the BMW M3 (E36) was the two-door coupé introduced in 1992. By comparison with the BMW M3 (E30), the visual appearance of the new BMW M3 (E36) was much more understated. It primarily differed from the series production vehicle as a result of the aerodynamically optimised rear-view mirrors, slightly modified front and rear aprons and a special design for the rims with 17" forged wheel rims. The visual appearance of the coupé was revised for the 1996 model year. Production of the coupé continued until April 1999 with a total of 46,525 units being built in Regensburg and Rosslyn.

In January 1994, a convertible version of the BMW M3 (E36) was presented at the Brussels Motor Show. By comparison with the coupé, the convertible was approximately 80 kg heavier due to the roof mechanism. The M3 Convertible was powered by the same engine as the coupé, an inline six-cylinder engine developed by M GmbH with a displacement of 3.0 litres (S50B30) that delivered 286 hp. In August 1995, production of the M3 Convertible was brought to a temporary halt until March 1996. After resumption of production, a new version of the S50 engine was installed with a displacement of 3.2 litres. It generated a maximum power output of 321 hp. Production of the BMW M3 Convertible came to an end in 1999. A total of 12,114 units were manufactured in Regensburg.

The roadster was the standard body of the BMW Z3 M. Out of 15,322 units built, more than 70 % of all Z3 M automobiles built were roadsters. The distinguishing features on the exterior included an exhaust system with four tailpipes manufactured from polished stainless steel and an overall more sporty appearance to the bodywork created by a variety of different details. Some visual and technical changes were carried out in April 1999 such as a roof with improved insulation, chrome bars for the kidney-shaped grille and chrome headlamp frames. After production of the S50 engine to power the M Roadster was brought to an end in July 2000, sales began with the new S54 engine in March 2001. The visual appearance of the new models was difficult to identify. Only the M logos at the rear and on the side were a little more sculptural and the instruments in the interior had a grey background rather than black.

The BMW M Coupé was presented in September 1997 at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show. Production at the American Spartanburg Plant (South Carolina) ultimately started up in April 1998. The installed power plant was provided by two different six-cylinder inline engines that were refined by M GmbH (S50 and S54). Special solutions (S52, S54US) were developed for the North American market because the engines were unable to comply with the local exhaust emissions regulations applicable there. The M Coupé is distinguished visually from the Z3 Coupé owing to the extended track, four-pipe exhaust system, oval exterior mirrors, chrome air scoops and additional air inlets on the front apron. This is one of the shortest automobiles to come from the M GmbH stable and has a length of just 4,025 mm.

The BMW M5 (E39) was produced exclusively as a sedan. There was a prototype for a touring model but this remained a one of one. The exterior was sporty but discreet. In spite of the larger dimensions than the M5 (E34), the M5 (E39) was only 70 kg heavier due to consistently lightweight construction. The exterior appearance was particularly recognisable by its front and rear apron and four exhaust tailpipes, the exterior mirrors and twin-kidney grille with chrome bars.

Once again, the design of the BMW M3 (E46) tended to return to the roots of the BMW M3 (E30) and differed more significantly from the series version than the BMW M3 (E36). The wheel arches were significantly wider, specially contoured side skirts complemented front and rear aprons, and there was a spoiler lip at the rear and a bulge (power dome) in the engine hood. Another identifying feature is provided by the gills in the front wheel arches, although they do not fulfil a technical function. From November 2004, customers were able to order the "Competition Package" ("Competition Paket") as a supplementary option for the coupé, which reprised some elements of the M3 CSL.

The BMW 3 Series compact (E46) was launched in the marketplace in June 2001 with the model revision of the BMW 3 Series Sedan (E46). By comparison with the sedan, the compact was graced with an exceptionally unique design, was 21 cm shorter and had a more sporty chassis. The agile handling and the practical, large trunk lid were primarily intended to attract a young circle of customers. Together with the sedan, the car was in the mid-range segment and in spite of the favourable entry-level price customers were presented with a choice from a wide range of special equipment options. Almost 200,000 vehicles of the compact were manufactured with a choice of five different engines until it was replaced by the BMW 1 Series (E87) in 2004.

At the end of 1993, BMW presented a completely new body version based on the BMW 3 Series (E36). The car was in dealer showrooms from April 1994. The new Compact was a two-door hatchback sedan shortened by approximately 23 cm. It had a large tailgate and space for four or five people. It was practical and manoeuvrable but it also possessed the sporty character so typical of BMW. The Compact was primarily aimed at a young target group or intended as a second vehicle for married couples or families. It was positioned to compete in the Golf class and the price was targeted as the new entry-level model for the BMW brand. After the sedan and the coupé, the Compact was in fact the version of the BMW 3 Series (E36) with the highest sales figures. Almost 400,000 units were sold.

Initially, the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series was supplied exclusively as a sedan in May 1998. The BMW 3 Series Sedan quickly moved to the top of the segment with a range of modern four-cylinder and six-cylinder inline engines. Although the BMW 3 Series Sedan (E46) was equipped as standard with rear-wheel drive, there were now once more other models with all-wheel drive. The variable valve control (VALVETRONIC) was introduced for the four-cylinder models during the model revision in 2001. Nearly two million units of this bodywork version had been sold by the time production came to an end in 2005.

The BMW 3 Series Touring (E46) was first seen at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in 1999. Up until the sales launch in October, Touring enthusiasts still had to be satisfied with the predecessor model (BMW 3 Series Touring E36). This was still being manufactured when the first E46 sedans could already be seen on the road. The large trunk to accommodate baggage in the Touring was equipped as standard with a partition net and roller cover. As in the case of the BMW 5 Series (E39), the rear window could be opened separately from the tailgate in order to load and unload smaller items of baggage. The roof rail supplied as an option gave the profile a sporting look and offered the platform based on an integrated design for the multifunction BMW roof rack that facilitated easy transport for surfboards, bicycles and other bulky luggage. The Touring offered a large variety of engine options with the most popular being the BMW 320D. A total of more than 400,000 BMW 3 Series Touring automobiles rolled out of the factory gates at the Regensburg Plant.

The BMW 3 Series Coupé (E46, also E46/2) only arrived in 1998, almost a year after the successful presentation of the BMW 3 Series Sedan (E46/4) in the marketplace. The coupé presented a rather more athletic design and was more elegant than the sedan, and in particular the styling at the front and rear is exceptionally unique. The bumper trims on the sides are styled in the colour of the car. The sports chassis tuning was provided as standard with the intention of translating this visual impression into the driving experience. The coupé was given a model upgrade in 2003. The production run of almost 450,000 coupés were all manufactured at the Regensburg Plant. In 2006, production of the series came to an end and the successor model was launched on the marketplace in 2007 as the BMW 3 Series Coupé (E92).

The BMW 3 Series (E46) had already been familiar for two years when the four-seater convertible joined the series in 2000. It was based on the sporty, elegant contours of the coupé, and up to the A-pillar the two bodywork profiles were actually identical. However, a rather different rear end combined with the elegant hood to give the convertible a highly individual character. The soft top was made of fabric but it was exceptionally robust and produced to a very high standard of quality. This meant that it did not lose its shape even when the car was being driven at high speeds. Although the roof was extremely well insulated and was indeed snow proof, a hardtop was offered as an option from 2001. From 2003, a fully automatic convertible roof was offered for all models. This mechanism opened and closed the compartment housing the convertible top when it was activated. The driver could operate the mechanism from the cockpit or by using the remote control.

The design of the new BMW 5 Series introduced in 1995 was primarily the responsibility of Joji Nagashima. The BMW 5 Series Sedan was impressive with a side profile emulating a coupé and aerodynamically optimised contours. The round double headlamps were installed behind the same glass cover for the first time in the model series. Light rings for the position light had been a typical BMW characteristic for a long time and they were introduced when the revision was carried out for the model year 2001.

The BMW 5 Series Touring from the new model series followed the sedan in March 1997. The sedan provided the all-aluminium chassis with the rear axle adapted to the requirements of the touring body. The aluminium compact rear axle permitted an even flatter configuration thanks to the inclined arrangement of the shock absorbers. This enabled the luggage compartment of the BMW 5 Series Touring to be even more smoothly contoured and designed without disruptive suspension pods. This measure further increased the already high utility value of the Touring model. The BMW 5 Series Touring also introduced the rear window that could be opened separately. This allowed small items of luggage to be loaded and unloaded without opening the entire tailgate. In addition, an extendable loading floor was available for the 5 Series Touring and this made loading much easier, particularly for heavy or bulky items.

The third generation of the BMW 7 Series was not a complete innovation, at least as far as the design was concerned. The characteristic line was sensitively revised and in spite of the larger dimensions, the stylists succeeded in giving the E38 an even more elegant and dynamic appearance than that of the predecessor generation. The sedan was supplied in a standard and an extended version. From 1996, it was also available as the L7 stretch luxury limousine version with the wheelbase extended by 30 cm. The power unit was also supplied with previously unparalleled diversity. Alongside eight petrol-engine versions, BMW also for the first time offered six-cylinder and eight-cylinder diesel engines in the luxury class, along with a small series powered by hydrogen.

From spring of 1998, a coupé version was also ranged alongside the popular BMW Z3 Roadster. The initially rather polarising design styled with a shooting-brake body (in other words a sporty hatchback coupé) was unflatteringly referred to as a "Turnschuh" or "Clown Shoe". Today, the rare BMW Z3 Coupé is a highly coveted classic car. The coupés were only produced with six-cylinder inline engines and in each case also only with the largest engines: as the BMW Z3 Coupé 2.8 (later replaced by the BMW Z3 Coupé 3.0i) and as the M Coupé. The equipment was correspondingly upscale. Between 1998 and 2002, a total of 17,815 BMW Z3 Coupés were manufactured. Its successor, the BMW Z4 Coupé (E86), was only launched in the marketplace in 2006.

The BMW Z8 was only supplied as a roadster. The exterior embodied the classic fundamental characteristics of a roadster with a long engine hood, a short rear end, a seating position located towards the tail and short overhangs. At the same time, the interior and exterior design combined classic contours with modern technology. The round headlamps were designed on the basis of Xenon technology, and the Z8 was the first BMW automobile to be equipped with an elegant "Engine Start" button for activating the ignition.

The first BMW X5 was already being marketed as an SAV ("Sports Activity Vehicle"). Although it featured an enclosed design, a higher seat position and a hatchback rear end, the car provided comfort comparable with a sedan along with the legendary sheer driving pleasure of the "Ultimate Driving Machine" ("Freude am Fahren"). And the BMW X5 also easily mastered driving on off-road terrain. Frank Stephenson was responsible for the design of the BMW X5. Today, he ranks among one of the world's most influential automobile designers.

The BMW Z4 Roadster was launched in the American market in 2002 and it was also sold in Germany from 2003. It adopts the classic roadster proportions with a long engine hood, a long wheelbase, short overhangs and a low seating position located well to the rear. The Z4 was positioned as more upscale than the Z3. Hence, there were only six-cylinder inline engines in the beginning, although the BMW Z4 M Roadster powered by the S54 engine was the flagship model in the series. The BMW Z4 Roadster embodied "Sheer Driving Pleasure" ("Freude am Fahren") to perfection, combined with timeless elegance.

The BMW Z4 Coupé (E86) is the enclosed version of the BMW Z4 Roadster (E85). The series was launched four years after the roadster in 2006. The two versions share the same technical platform. However, in contrast to the roadster, the BMW Z4 Coupé was only supplied with two powerful engine options (BMW Z4 3.0si and BMW Z4 M Coupé), which both had inline six-cylinder engines. The BMW Z4 M Coupé was the flagship model and was powered by the popular S54 engine from the BMW M3 (E46).

The BMW M3 Convertible (E46) was presented at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2001, although production had already started in April 2000. It differed significantly from the BMW 3 Series standard with flared wheel arches, a specially contoured front apron with large air scoops and a bulge (power dome) in the engine hood. The model upgrade carried out in February 2003 was extremely subtle and was only identifiable by the new LED taillights and a dynamic brake light. A total of 29,633 units were sold and the majority of these cars (17,577) went to the USA. Another 7,234 vehicles were righthand drive cars.

The BMW Z4 M Roadster was less polarising than the BMW Z3 M Roadster. The design featured a plethora of concave and convex edges and reveals the signature of Chris Bangle. The M version of the BMW Z4 was immediately recognisable from the front by the two aerodynamic flaps positioned on the front apron and the design edges on the engine hood. The rear end featured a characteristic exhaust system with four tailpipes. The driver was welcomed by door sills embellished with the M logo when opening the door. An interior upholstered in carbon-embossed leather was available as an option provided exclusively for BMW Z4 vehicles.

The BMW Z4 M Coupé (E86) was the successor to the BMW Z3 M Coupé (E36). While the roadster version (E85) was already presented in the public arena in October 2005, enthusiasts had to wait for the Geneva Motor Show in March 2006 until they could admire the coupé. The M front apron with aerodynamic flaps and the rear diffuser were the most striking features of the exterior distinguishing the M version from the "Standard" Z4. Carbon-embossed leather and white backlit instruments created a perfect sporty ambience for the interior.
