Since we first laid eyes on the Concept 4 at the Frankfurt motor show in 2019 the arrival of the second generation has been eagerly awaited. One of the most anticipated elements is the new Kidney Grille design and its bold differentiation from the outgoing model. This bold new design aims to reflect classic models from BMW’s past whilst setting a new design pathway for the future. Although the initial press imagery received mixed reviews the anticipation for this exciting new model has grown. Now, the wait is finally over.
The 24th October marked the official showroom launch of the new 4 Series Coupé and a chance to finally experience this exciting model in the showroom. The first thing you notice is the low stance that the new silhouette creates, leaving no doubt that this new model is every bit a true BMW Coupé. Sharp lines surrounding the headlights and air intakes compliment the athletic design. How about the new kidney grill?
Although a very noticeable change from the first generation of 4 Series, in person the new grill blends seamlessly with the contours of this new model. The showroom vehicle we photographed featured the shadow line trim package which adds a gloss black finish to the kidney grill. This darker appearance helps the 4 Series look more aggressive especially when paired with a darker paint finish.
The interior offers all the comfort, luxury and technology you would expect from a BMW. Drivers of the current G20 BMW 3 Series will be familiar with some of the interior details including the latest digital cockpit and iDrive 7.0. New sports seats finished in fine Vernasca leather are available in a choice of colours including Tacora red, Oyster and Cognac. A selection of interior trims including Aluminium Mesh, Aluminium Tetragon and Piano Black compliment the knurled finish to the controls to complete the premium feel of the cabin.
The standard colour palette for the 4 Series includes the familiar Alpine and Mineral White, Black Sapphire and Portimao Blue which can also be found on the BMW 3 Series. New option available to the 4 Series include Arctic Race Blue and the striking Sanremo Green, both of which will also be available from launch on the convertible.
It is not only the most obvious features that make this new 4 Series a special occasion. As you take a closer look you notice the more subtle and elegant details that arguably make a big difference. Running down the lower side of the 4 Series’ profile is an elegant crease that travels the length of the vehicle. This simple line assists the 4 in achieving a lower, more assertive silhouette. Another small but striking detail is the standard LED headlights which feature an intricate internal design and a revised version of the iconic Halo lights.
Overall the new BMW 4 Series Coupé series is a sporty and provoking new addition to the BMW range. The new design direction this model takes will undoubtedly continue the iconic status of the 4 series whilst leading a new design era for BMW. The first generation proved popular around the world along with its Convertible and Gran Coupe siblings however, this was a result not only of aesthetics but driving dynamics.
