A New Era for BMW's Original Sports Activity Vehicle
BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5, and it marks the biggest change to the model since it launched back in 1999. Built on BMW's new Neue Klasse design language, the new X5 introduces a bold new look, a completely redesigned interior, and for the first time ever, a fully electric option in the shape of the BMW iX5.
At Halliwell Jones BMW, we're excited to bring the new X5 range to our Chester, Warrington, Wilmslow, Southport and North Wales showrooms when it launches in the UK in spring 2027. Here's everything we know so far.
What's New on the BMW X5?
The new X5 keeps the classic BMW SAV proportions that made the model a global bestseller, while introducing a distinctly modern look. Highlights include:
- A striking new front end with the BMW Iconic Glow vertical kidney grille and new switchable "double-X" daytime running lights
- New BMW Winglet door handles, with the option of automatic soft-close doors
- A sloping roofline, muscular wheel arches and redesigned taillights that stretch almost the full width of the car
- Up to eleven exterior paint choices and alloy wheels up to 23 inches, giving buyers plenty of scope for personalisation
Customers looking for a sportier edge will be able to choose from M Sport, M Sport Pro and M Performance trims, each bringing its own styling details, from darker kidney grilles to 22-inch alloy wheels and M Sport brakes.
A Redesigned Interior, Built Around the Driver.
Step inside and the new X5 feels like a completely different cabin to the outgoing model. Clean lines and uncluttered surfaces sit alongside new materials, including slate, used as a decorative surface by a car manufacturer for the very first time. A wraparound cockpit introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive, bringing together the Central Display, BMW Panoramic Vision and a 3D Head-Up Display, with an optional Passenger Screen also available.
Standard equipment includes a large panoramic sunroof and sports seats with enhanced quilting, while options stretch to ventilated and massaging multifunction seats in BMW Individual Merino Leather, four-zone climate control and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos.
Introducing the All-Electric BMW iX5.
For the first time, the X5 will be available as a fully electric model. The BMW iX5 uses sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, with the flagship 60 xDrive offering:
- Up to 525 miles of WLTP range
- A system output of 578 hp from two electric motors
- Charging speeds of up to 460 kW, thanks to 800-volt architecture
- A 141 kWh (net) high-voltage battery, built with new, taller cylindrical cells
Alongside the iX5, UK customers will be able to choose from two plug-in hybrid derivatives, the X5 50e xDrive and the range-topping X5 M60e xDrive, plus a diesel-powered X5 40d xDrive with 48V mild hybrid support. A fully electric M Performance version is also confirmed to join the range at a later date.
Advanced Technology and Driving Dynamics.
Every new X5 comes with adaptive suspension as standard, alongside a near-50:50 weight distribution for confident, comfortable handling. The all-electric iX5 uses BMW's Heart of Joy software to sharpen its driving dynamics, while combustion and plug-in hybrid models benefit from a new tenth-generation transverse dynamics management system.
Driver assistance technology has also taken a step forward. Driving Assistant Plus and Parking Assistant with AI-supported space detection come as standard, while the optional Motorway Assistant enables hands-free driving support at speeds of up to 81 mph, including automated lane changes.
When Can I Order the New BMW X5?
The new BMW X5 will be built at BMW's Plant Spartanburg in the United States, the same site that has produced every generation of the X5 since 1999. UK deliveries of the all-electric, plug-in hybrid and diesel models are set to begin in spring 2027.
We'll be sharing more details on specification, options and availability as the launch date approaches. In the meantime, keep an eye on our website and social channels, or get in touch with the team at your nearest Halliwell Jones BMW showroom to register your interest.
