BMW has revealed the new BMW 8 Series Convertible, also known as The 8 Convertible, and it doesn’t disappoint. Combining open-top, four-seater luxury with sportscar performance, it has all the elegance of the coupé but with a little extra glamour thrown in.
Smooth soft-top.
The 8 Convertible’s roof opens and closes automatically at the touch of a button in just 15 seconds, and at speeds of up to 31mph. What’s more, a wind deflector comes as standard and helps reduce turbulence when the roof is down.
Lush interior.
Boasting a stainless steel mesh design as standard on both the M850i xDrive and the BMW 840d xDrive, there is plenty to admire as both a driver and passenger. Multifunction seats are trimmed in Merino leather with a range of colour choices, which is matched by the standard M leather steering wheel. And to complete the sensory experience, a harman/kardon Surround Sound System featuring 12 speakers comes as standard.

Two engines will be offered at launch: a V8 petrol engine in the BMW M850i xDrive version and 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel in the BMW 840d xDrive; each being accompanied by a model-specific sports exhaust system.
The BMW M850i xDrive is powered by 530hp with a peak torque of 750Nm, which goes from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds, while the BMW 840d xDrive offers 320hp, a peak torque of 700Nm and goes from 0 to 62mph in 5.2 seconds.
Designed.
Using the new 8 Series design language, The 8 Convertible maintains a muscular yet elegant stance, appearing wider and with a lower centre of gravity. The third brake light embedded in the boot lid adds to the low-slung look.
Instantly noticeable are the precise character lines, which trace the path of the airflow between the front and rear wheels. Adding to this sporty aesthetics are contoured surfaces, which interplay beautifully from the iconic kidney grille to the twin exhaust trapezoidal tailpipes.
Intuitive connectivity.
The 8 Convertible comes with BMW Live Cockpit Professional as standard. This includes a fully digital, high-resolution instrument cluster with a 12.3” screen and a 10.25” control display. It’s complemented by the new and intuitive BMW Operating System 7.0 and the new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which is activated by the voice prompt “Hey BMW”.
Additional features includes Intelligent Vehicle Functionality, which learns drivers habits and rules as part of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the BMW Display Key, and Apple CarPlay Preparation service, which will be included as standard for one year from build.
Enhanced safety.
A new convertible-only rollover protection system has been engineered for the car. It consists of two protective aluminium bars fitted within the head restraints and they will be deployed if the car is likely to roll over to protect up to four occupants.
