As the demand for electrified vehicles continue to grow BMW continues to increase its presence in the market of premium electric vehicles. This year the portfolio has increased with the launch of updated plug-in hybrid models such as the X3 xDrive30e and X5 xDrive45e. As the New Year approaches so does the anticipation of more exciting models joining the range. Next year will see the launch of the X1 xDrive25e plug in hybrid with both the iX3 and i4 moving a step closer to production.
The BMW i3 has also shown continued growth over this year with a 17% share of the global market for compact EVs. This has in part been helped by the improved powertrains that now deliver a more efficient driving experience with all electric ranges of up to 190 miles. As the next generation of electric powered BMWs enter production the market is expected to experience further growth. BMW is aiming to lead the way for electric vehicles in the premium sector.
The future of BMW electric mobility will be influenced by the introduction of the fifth-generation eDrive technology. This new iteration of the BMW electric powertrain features the very latest innovations in battery cell technology. Customer will first be able to experience the fifth-generation eDrive technology in the upcoming BMW iX3 which will be produced from 2020 onwards. The iX3 will be followed by the iNEXT and i4 models which are expected in 2021. These models will pioneer a new standard of electric driving with the BMW i4 delivering sporty performance whilst also achieving over 370 miles of range.
BMW is not only committed to delivering class leading, fully electric models. Advancements made in battery cell technology extend the capability of the plug-in hybrid models. These models provide emissions free driving capabilities for local driving whilst utilising a combustion engine for longer journeys. This package offers the perfect choice for anyone that is looking to reduce their emissions but whose needs are not currently met by a fully electric vehicle.
BMWs plug-in hybrid model range covers a variety of segments and customer needs. The entry into the line-up starts with the 2 Series Active Tourer 225xe which delivers an extremely smooth driving experience with high levels of interior space and practicality. The executive saloon segment is covered by the 3 series 330e and the more luxurious 5 Series 530e. For those looking for off-road capabilities, both the X3xDrive30e and X5 xDrive45e offer all the features you can expect from BMW xDrive with the assistance of electric driving. Sitting at the top of the line-up and offering the ultimate in BMW luxury is the 745e.
