VED Tax Changes - how will it affect your new car?

DV Arrow

If you are thinking of purchasing a new BMW or MINI in the coming months it may be worth bringing the purchase of your new car forward to take advantage of our current offers and beat the VED price increases on 1st April 2017.

For more information, you can complete our contact form, telephone or visit your local Halliwell Jones Dealership and have a chat. We are happy to talk through the changes and provide you with all of the information you require.

With effect from 1st April Vehicle Excise Duty, know as VED or road tax will be operated under a new banding system. Every newly registered car will be tax in accordance with CO2 bands for its first year on the road.

Only fully electric or hydrogen fuel-cell cars with zero emissions will be liable for the lowest, tax free-band.

From the second year, zero-emission cars under a value of £40,000 will continue to be tax-free, and cars of any other band taxed a minimum of £140 a year.

If your vehicle has a value above £40,000 it will be taxed an extra ‘Premium’ fee of £310 a year, regardless of its CO2 band, up until its fifth year on the road.

These changes only apply to cars first registered after 1 April 2017. If you register your new car by 31 March 2017, the updated road tax rates won't apply. The reforms also only cover privately owned cars.
